Mike was initiated into the ancient classical martial art tradition of Yagyu Shingan Ryu on the 27th March 1999 by the headmaster Shimazu Kenji. He is a student of Philip Hinshelwood, the Australia Branch headmaster. Mike holds 3 licences in the tradition namely Shoden, Kiri and Kirigami presented to him personally by headmaster Shimazu Kenji. This tradition focuses on Jujutsu and its related weapons.
Mike was also initiated into the ancient classical martial art tradition of Morishige Ryu in November 2019 by headmaster Shimazu Kenji’s senior student Uchi Daisuke sensei. This tradition focuses on Gunnery and the short sword.
Mike trains at the head dojo located in Gunnedah, Australia and also at the Keikokai in the Hunter Valley. He has also trained in Japan on several occasions.
